What to read off the car. A generic layout with a made-up VIN, not your car.
Shopping for a 2017 to 2020 BMW 540i? Most of what to check comes from BMW's own bulletins and warranty extensions and from NHTSA's public records, not forum talk. This is what to look at, why, and what to ask the seller. It is a checklist, not a verdict on any car.
Which cars
Built to June 25, 2019BMW's PCV warranty list names these 540i and 540i xDrive cars (engine code B58M).
Built after June 25, 2019Not on the PCV list. BMW's own bulletins give these cars both engine codes, B58M and B58C, so ask a BMW dealer what applies by VIN.
What the VIN and the sticker tell you
Where to find itBottom corner of the windshield, the sticker on the driver's door jamb, and a stamp in the engine bay (on newer BMWs, usually the passenger side). Under the intake manifold the block carries the engine code, a build date and part of the VIN. If any of them disagree with the title, walk away.
Characters 4 to 7JE5C is a 540i and JE7C a 540i xDrive on 2017 to 2019 cars. 2020 cars read JS1C and JS3C. JA5C or JA7C is a 530i, a four-cylinder.
Character 10Model year: H is 2017, J 2018, K 2019, L 2020.
Door jamb stickerThe build month. It decides which BMW bulletin window your car falls in. Near a cutoff (June 2017, June 2018, June 2019) the dealer VIN check decides.
Factory optionsSome bulletins apply only to cars with certain options. Our Buyer Check lists the factory option codes on record for the VIN in plain English.
BMW has put seven warranty extensions in writing that we found for these cars. None is a recall. Each counts from the car's original in-service date, and a BMW dealer sees the notice on an eligible VIN.
PCV valve diaphragm15 years/150,000 miles. Built Aug 18, 2016 to June 25, 2019 (SI B01 14 23, Nov 2023).
Grille air flaps, 2017 cars10 years/120,000 miles. 540i built July 8, 2016 to June 29, 2017; xDrive Sept 8, 2016 to June 30, 2017 (SI B01 01 19, Aug 2022).
Grille air flaps, 2018 and 2019 cars15 years/150,000 miles. 540i built June 19, 2017 to June 24, 2019; xDrive June 26, 2017 to June 25, 2019 (SI B01 12 19, June 2023).
Passenger seat mat, false "seat occupied" warning10 years/120,000 miles. Built Nov 9, 2016 to June 25, 2018. Covers wiring shielding and ground faults only, not wet seats or phones on the seat, and not the seat heater (SI B72 01 25, Feb 2026).
Fuel vapor leak module (NVLD)15 years/150,000 miles. 540i built June 28, 2017 to June 18, 2020; xDrive June 26, 2017 to June 26, 2020 (SI B01 09 21, July 2026).
Fuel vapor purge valve15 years/150,000 miles. Listed for 2017 to 2023 540i and 540i xDrive, VIN notice decides (SI B01 03 24, June 2026).
Emergency call backup battery (TCU)6 years, no mileage limit. Built Mar 13, 2018 to June 25, 2019 (SI B01 18 24, Jan 2025). Has run out on most cars.
The years run from the in-service date. The 10 year covers are ending now: the first 2017 air flap covers could run out as early as July 2026 and the first seat mat covers as early as November 2026. Ask the dealer for the in-service date and the miles. Cars built after these windows are not on the lists we found. BMW's terms exclude outside influences, non-genuine parts and cars repaired outside the US, and debris in the grille is not a flap defect. We searched NHTSA's bulletin files, not BMW's dealer system, so there may be more.
Recalls on 2017 to 2020 cars
From NHTSA's recall data, read October 23, 2026. Recalls follow the VIN, and dealers repair them free.
20V2430002017Head air bag inflators exposed to humidity may not deploy properly. Dealers replace the head air bag.
18V4650002018Some cars have crankshaft sensor firmware that can cause a stall. NHTSA lists the 540i under 2018 only; BMW's expansion text names 2018 to 2019. Dealers replace the sensor.
19V6840002018 to 2020Rear camera settings can leave the reverse image blank. Software update.
20V598000, 21V0960002020A small part of the reverse camera image may be slightly obscured, or the screen may not light in reverse. Dealers check the camera software and update it if needed.
21V0460002020 xDriveRear output shafts can break from a heat treatment error. Dealers replace them.
21V5980002020Engine software can drop braking assist at start. Software update.
A 2026 driveshaft recall, 26V525000, lists 2021 to 2023 540is, not 2017 to 2020. This list can miss a recall. Run the VIN yourself at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What owners tell NHTSA
19 of 59 complaints on 2017 to 2020 540is name the passenger seat or restraint warning. All 19 are 2017 or 2018 cars. BMW's seat mat extension covers builds to June 25, 2018 (SI B72 01 25).
3 name the oil pump, all filed in 2026 on 2019 and 2020 cars. Our shopWe have seen it too: on the revised engine (code B58C) a plastic seal inside the pump breaks up and sends pieces through the oil. It is not sold alone, so the fix is a new pump. Seen so far on pre-facelift X5s (2019 to 2023) with that engine. No BMW bulletin covers it. If the dealer says your 540i has the B58C, plan the pump before 150,000 miles.
3 name coolant: a leaking hose, a leaking radiator and water pump, a false low coolant message.
7 describe a sudden surge, power loss or shift to neutral. Causes are not verified.
5 mention a crash and 2 an injury. None mention a fire or a death.
Pulled October 23, 2026. These are single owner reports, not failure rates.
Where to look, in the order of the checks below. Car and photo: @kel.____ on TikTok.
The checks, one by one
1 PCV valveSI B01 14 23The rubber diaphragm in the valve cover can split: blue or white smoke after a cold start, a whistle at idle, cylinder 6 misfire codes 140601 and 140610, limp mode. Check: start it cold and watch the tailpipe, then have a BMW shop run its crankcase pressure test.
2 Grille air flapsSI B01 12 19, B51 22 19The flaps behind the kidney grilles can stick or lose a linkage pin, or a motor can fail. A check engine light or message may show, or nothing is stored. BMW's own sign: the passenger-side upper flaps visibly stuck open or closed. Check: look through the grille, and have a dealer read the air flap faults.
3 Passenger seat sensorSI B72 01 25The seat mat can send false "seat occupied, belt off" warnings, sometimes with the air bag lamp on and a passenger air bag deactivation message. BMW's causes: moisture, a phone or laptop charging on the seat, loose or poorly shielded mat wiring. BMW's 10 year/120,000 mile extension covers builds to June 25, 2018. BMW's fix is cable ties or a wiring kit, then a new seat mat, not a new control module. Check: start it with the seat empty, then with a bag on it. Treat a passenger restraint or air bag lamp as an open safety fault until a BMW shop has scanned it.
4 Heater hoseSI B17 01 18On the B58 540i the steering shaft can wear through the heater hose: a coolant leak, a noise turning the wheel, a low coolant message. BMW's fix is a hose bracket, and a new hose if it is worn. Check: ask whether the hose bracket from BMW's 2018 bulletin was fitted (part 64 21 9 128 983 then; BMW may have superseded it), and check the coolant level cold.
5 xDrive shudderSI B27 02 20A jerk or shudder when cornering or pulling away slowly, with no warning light. BMW looks at tires first: a badly worn tire keeps the xDrive engaged. Then the transfer case and its oil. Check: slow tight turns on dry pavement, and even tire wear, each axle on the car's factory size, front and rear not swapped.
6 Rear cameraSI B66 08 17BMW logged cars where the reverse image sometimes does not appear. Software fixes it, and BMW says rare failures can still happen. BMW also says it rarely repeats on demand, so a good test drive does not clear a car. Check: ask whether the camera software was updated, and shift into reverse after a restart.
7 Daytime running lightsSI B63 04 18A damaged connection between the LED module and the light tube makes a daytime light dim or discolored. BMW replaces the module, and the headlight only if the light tube is damaged too. The bulletin lists the repair under the new car warranty, and we found no extension. Check: lights on, in shade, and compare left and right.
8 Software faultsSI B12 08 18, B12 13 18, B12 07 18Some rough running and stored faults come from old engine software, not parts: camshaft and VANOS codes on cars built to March 14, 2018, valve lift fault 21A02D, and oil pressure code 1C0102, which BMW says a software error can store by mistake on some cars built to June 30, 2018 when no other oil pressure fault is stored. BMW says that glitch causes no dash message, so a real oil pressure warning is a different problem. BMW's fix is reprogramming. Check: a full scan with history, and when the software was last updated.
Questions for the seller
Was the PCV valve ever replaced? Invoice? Does a dealer's VIN check show the warranty notices?
Any check engine light, limp mode, smoke on a cold start or tow-in? What was found?
Any coolant top-ups or low coolant messages? Was the heater hose bracket fitted?
Has the passenger air bag lamp or belt warning ever come on? Was the seat mat replaced, and is the B72 01 25 notice on the VIN?
xDrive: is the tire wear even, with the right size on each axle? Was the transfer case oil changed?
Which recalls and service actions are done? Run the VIN yourself at nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask a BMW dealer to read the warranty notices off the VIN.
Has the 8-speed fluid ever been changed? BMW calls it lifetime fill, so ask what was done and when.
Any tune, flash or downpipe? Can a BMW dealer scan it before I buy?
Price it in. A car with one of these notices on its VIN may get that part fixed free at a BMW dealer, if it is still inside the years and miles and the dealer confirms the fault is that part. A car without the notice has no such cover. Ask a dealer to read the notices off the VIN before you agree on a number.
BMW facts come from BMW's service bulletins on file with NHTSA that we found (each named by its SI number), not from BMW's dealer system, so there may be newer revisions and more extensions. Recalls, complaint counts and VIN decoding come from NHTSA's public data, read October 23, 2026. NHTSA's investigation list, read October 24, 2026, shows no investigation naming 2017 to 2020 540is. Bulletin lists are revised, so confirm coverage with a BMW dealer by VIN. Owner reports are labeled as such. This is a paper check, not a hands-on inspection: have a BMW shop put the car on a lift before you buy.
