BMW S58 Engine guide

BMW S58 engine drawing

The S58 is BMW M's 3.0-liter inline six with two turbochargers. It powers the G80 M3 and G82 M4. BMW introduced the 2020 X3 M and X4 M, powered by the S58, in February 2019. The new M3 and M4 followed in September 2020.

Where you find it

  • X3 M (F97) and X4 M (F98): 2020 models with 473 hp. BMW said production would start in April 2019 at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina.
  • M3 Sedan (G80) and M4 Coupe (G82): 473 hp, or 503 hp in Competition form. BMW set the US market launch for March 2021 and said M xDrive would arrive as an option on Competition models in summer 2021.
  • M4 Competition Convertible (G83): 503 hp, with US market launch in October 2021.
  • M2 (G87): BMW Blog lists the M2 among the cars the S58 powers.

BMW's M3 and M4 specs list 2,993 cc, two mono-scroll turbochargers with electronically controlled wastegates, a closed-deck block and a forged crankshaft.

Known wear items

BMW Blog wrote in 2024 that the S58 is still relatively new and that early signs point toward good reliability. The recall below comes from BMW. The other items are what parts retailers report, not BMW.

Engine software: BMW emissions recall 25E-A03

BMW bulletin SI B12 01 25 (June 2025) turned a delivery stop into an emissions recall for certain X3 M, X4 M, M3, M4 and M2 models built between November 2021 and January 2025. BMW names the cause as a DME software error: the check engine light is not turned on when fault code P15A3 is stored. The fix is a DME software update, not a part. Ask a BMW dealer to check your VIN for open recalls.

Ignition coils

One parts retailer lists signs of a failing BMW coil, including misfires, rough idle, loss of power and a check engine light. It says coils are usually replaced when they show signs of failure, not as preventive maintenance. What replaces it: the Bosch 0986221124 ignition coil (BMW 12138643360), listed for the S58.

Oil seepage at the oil cooler

Two parts retailers report oil leaks at the oil cooler, and one calls the oil cooler housing and its gaskets a potential leak point on early production engines. What the owner notices: an oil smell when the engine is warm and oil seepage at the front of the engine. The parts involved are the oil cooler housing and its gaskets. We do not list these yet. One parts retailer notes that the S58 oil filter housing is all metal, made by Hengst, and does not see the same failure rate as the plastic housing on the B58.

Carbon on the intake valves

One parts retailer notes that the S58 does not wash its intake valves with fuel, and says carbon builds up on the valves over time. Another says the S58 is susceptible to intake valve carbon deposits over time. Owners notice rough idle and hesitation. It recommends walnut blast cleaning as preventive maintenance on cars used mostly at low speeds or for short trips.

Oil and routine service

BMW's engine oil chart, SI B11 01 15 (Feb 2017), does not list the S58. One BMW specialist states that LL-01 FE 0W-30 is the only oil approved for the S55, S58 and S68 engines. Confirm the approved oil and the fill amount in your owner's manual. See also our BMW fluids guide.

Before you buy

A BMW service bulletin tells dealers to confirm part numbers by chassis number, because equipment and options can change the part. Do the same before you order: enter your VIN at our fitment check. Our oil change kit and cabin filter are listed for the X3 M and X4 M, so confirm them by VIN on an M3, M4 or M2. See all our S58 parts at S58 engine parts.
