BMW Fluids Guide

BMW engines are built for oils that carry a BMW Longlife approval. The approval is printed on the bottle, like LL-01 FE or LL-17 FE+. This guide covers engine oil from BMW's own US chart. For other fluids, each fluid's page in our store lists the BMW spec it meets and the BMWs it's listed for.

Engine oil by model year

From BMW of North America service bulletin SI B11 01 15, the engine oil quick reference chart (February 2017 revision).

Gen 3 B58 (B58N), 2023 and newer

B58N (Gen 3 B58 with the 48V mild hybrid, including the 2024 and newer G20 LCI M340i): 0W-12 with BMW LL-22 FE++ only. Do not use 0W-20 or 0W-30 in a B58N. Never put 0W-12 in an older engine. This one is newer than the 2017 chart.

Model year 2016 and newer, gasoline

B38, B46, B48, B58, N20, N26: 0W-20 with BMW LL-14 FE+.
N54, N55, S55, S63, N63, N74: 0W-30 with BMW LL-01 FE.

Model year 2012 to 2015, gasoline

N20, N26, N51, N52, N54, N55, S55, S63, N63, N74, B38: 0W-30 with BMW LL-01 FE.

Model year 2011 and older, gasoline

5W-30 with BMW LL-01, or 0W-30 with BMW LL-01 FE. BMW's chart says the 0W-30 LL-01 FE oil is fully compatible with the older engines and with 5W-30 LL-01 oil.

M engines S54, S65 and S85

10W-60, in all years.

Diesel

For model year 2012 and newer diesels (N47, N57, M57, B57), BMW lists 0W-30 with BMW LL-12 FE. Check your owner's manual for older diesels.

LL-17 FE+ is the newer 0W-20 approval that follows LL-14 FE+ in BMW's parts catalog.

Or get the oil, filter and additive together in an oil change kit.

How much oil

Capacity depends on the engine and the car. Each oil change kit lists the liters it includes for the engines it fits. BMW's chart points to its operating fluids manual for exact capacities, so confirm with your owner's manual or send your VIN on Fitment Check.
