• Additive: Liqui Moly Hydraulic Lifter Additive 300 ml (20004). Per Liqui Moly, it reduces hydraulic lifter noise and cleans oil passages; one full can (300 ml) is used with 3 to 6 liters (3.2 to 6.4 U.S. quarts) of motor oil, it mixes on its own and can be added at any time (shake well first), and for best results Liqui Moly says to use it with every oil change. It is a Liqui Moly product, not a BMW part, and using it is your call. These engines take up to 7 L, more than the 3 to 6 L Liqui Moly rates one can for.

BMW of North America's oil chart SI B11 01 15 (February 2017 revision) lists for model year 2011 and older, 5W-30 LL01 or 0W-30 LL01FE for 'All BMW Gasoline Engines', noting 'The 0W-30 LL01FE engine oil is fully compatible with the older engines and the 5W-30 LL01 engine oil'; for model years 2012 to 2015, 0W-30 LL01FE for N51, N52K, N52T, N54, N54T and N55; from model year 2016, 0W-30 LL01FE for N54, N54T and N55. BMW's parts catalog calls the N52N engine on the 2012 and later cars here by a code the chart does not print; the chart's 2012 to 2015 gasoline table lists one oil, 0W-30 LL01FE. Liqui Moly's US oil guide lists Special Tec B FE for those cars.

BMW of North America's oil chart SI B11 01 15 (February 2017 revision) lists 6.5 L for the Z4 sDrive35i, 335i, 535i, X5 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive35i and more and gives no figure for the other cars here; Liqui Moly's US oil guide lists '6.5 liter', '6.5-7 liter (Service fill)', '6.5 liter; 7 liter (+ oil cooler)' and '6.5 liter (Service fill)'.
