Engine code
S70 · 5,576 cc · 60-degree V12 · catalog dates 02/1992-10/1996 (all markets) · E31 850CSi
The S70 is a 5,576 cc, 60-degree V12. In the BMW data we checked it appears in one car, the E31 850CSi. BMW's data for this engine is thin, so this page is short on purpose.
This page does not cover other versions of the engine, including any variant with a suffix after the S70 code. We found no BMW document for those.
This page is built from BMW's own parts data, service bulletins and training material. Where those sources are silent, it says so instead of guessing.

Known Failure Points and Service Items
We found one BMW bulletin that names the S70, and one NHTSA recall that lists the 850CSi.
01 Battery discharge after the car sits
BMW's bulletin SI 12 02 98 covers 850CSi cars with the EWS II immobilizer built since 01/1995: left parked for a few days, such a car can come back to a flat battery. BMW's cause is the EML actuator motors, which can keep drawing current after shutdown.
Watch for a flat battery after a few days parked, and the EML actuator motors still humming more than 10 seconds after shutdown. BMW's fix on a complaint is an added relay, 61 36 1 393 412, with the adapter line kit 12 51 4 013 174. BMW's bulletin ties the relay to the 850CSi only.
BMW's parts data also attaches the oil filter support tower bulletin (SI 00 15 97) to the S70 oil filter element. That bulletin itself names the M60, M70 and M73 and does not name the S70, so we treat it as a pointer from BMW's catalogue, not a finding about the S70.
02 Cooling system recall 98V-178
NHTSA's record for recall 98V-178 lists the 850CSi for model years 1991-1995. The record names models and model years, not engines, and BMW's U.S. parts data lists the S70 850CSi for model years 1994-1995. NHTSA says a failed cooling system part such as the thermostat, water pump or fan belt can sharply raise coolant temperature and pressure, and that a cracked heater core end piece could then release hot coolant. The remedy is a new-design radiator cap.
Watch for an overheating warning.
