Engine code
The S54B32 is BMW M's 3.2-liter (3,246 cc) naturally aspirated inline-six. BMW's service bulletin on model year 2001 maintenance lists the S54B32 as superseding the S50B32 in the M roadster and M coupe. In US-market cars BMW's parts catalog lists the Z3 M with the S52 until 07/2000 and with the S54 from 02/2001.
The S54 is also the engine of the E46 M3, and the same catalog lists it in the US-market Z4 M Roadster and Coupe through 08/2008.
This guide separates what BMW's own documents prove from what we have not yet established. Where a section says it is not established, that is a research limit, not a verdict.
Quick read
- Ownership position: Not established yet. We are still researching this engine.
- Reliability: No verdict is established here; BMW's bulletins cover rod bearing clearance, a cold-start issue on early Z3 M cars and a software update for the engine lamp, and we found no NHTSA recall for the engine.
- Cost to own: Not established yet.
- Power potential: Not established yet. BMW's S54B32 training module gives the E46 M3 factory output as 333 hp.
- Main watch item: Connecting-rod bearing clearance, covered by a BMW service bulletin rather than a recall.

Factory Deep Dive
Block and bottom end
BMW's training material says the block is cast iron, with 87 mm bores spaced 91 mm apart, and that the bare block weighs about 48 kg. BMW's training lists a forged steel crankshaft running in 7 main bearings, with 12 counterweights and a 91 mm stroke.
The connecting rods are forged steel and are cracked at the cap, 139 mm long, and BMW's training says a damaged rod bolt cannot be replaced on its own. Graphite-coated cast aluminum pistons get jet cooling from oil nozzles fixed in the crankcase.
Cylinder head and valvetrain
The cylinder head is an aluminum cross-flow design, and a double-roller timing chain drives the camshafts. Cam lift is 12 mm on both camshafts.
The valve fingers act on 9 mm shims, and the exhaust valve stems are sodium filled.
VANOS
Bolted to the front of the cylinder head, the VANOS unit carries four solenoids, a pair per camshaft. The intake camshaft adjusts through 60 degrees and the exhaust camshaft through 45 degrees.
The spread angle ranges are 70-130 degrees for the intake and 83-128 degrees for the exhaust. Oil under pressure for camshaft adjustment is held in a nitrogen-charged accumulator that sits behind the A/C compressor.
Intake, fuel and ignition
A one-piece plastic plenum feeds six individual throttle housings. BMW's training says the non-return fuel system is used for LEV compliance.
The ignition uses six pencil-type coils with the spark plug connector built in.
Oil and cooling
The oil pump is a two-stage design with a supply chamber and a scavenge chamber. BMW's training says a 95 C thermostat in the oil filter housing controls flow to the oil cooler.
The cooling system is a cross-flow design running at 2 bar, with an 80 C thermostat. Blow-by gas leaves through a sealed, unpressurized ventilation circuit, with intake manifold vacuum drawing it through a labyrinth oil separator.
Variants and markets
BMW's training describes the S54B32 as used worldwide, and the training gives separate outputs for the E46 M3 and for the M roadster and M coupe.
Wikipedia lists the US and Canada E46 M3 at 248 kW and 355 Nm.

Known Failure Points and Service Items
Only items backed by a BMW service bulletin or a recall are listed. Whether a specific car is covered is a VIN check with BMW.
01 Connecting-rod bearing clearance
BMW's service bulletin 11 03 01 (739) on the S54B32 says the connecting-rod assembly procedure was changed in production and the minimum bearing clearance for repairs changed from 0.03 mm to 0.04 mm, effective from the start of series production. It also says the rod bolts must not be replaced on this engine, unlike on other BMW engines, and points to repair instruction 11 24 571.
Watch for: the bulletin names no symptom. If an engine has had rod or bearing work, ask whether the repair used the revised minimum clearance. Whether this relates to a failure pattern is not established yet.
02 Cold-start surge on early Z3 M
BMW's service bulletin 11 02 01 (704) covers E36/7 cars with the S54 built from the start of series production to 05/2001 that stall or surge for the first 20-30 seconds after a cold start. BMW gives repeated starts without reaching normal temperature as the cause, because the initial fuel fill can soot the spark plugs.
Watch for: stalling or heavy surging after a cold start that clears when the engine is warm. BMW's remedy is to add at least 25 liters of fuel, bring the engine to normal temperature, and replace the spark plugs if it still misfires or surges heavily when started warm.
03 Engine emergency program lamp
BMW's service bulletin 11 01 03 (998) covers the engine emergency program lamp on the S54 with stored oxygen sensor fault codes, and says the cause is the engine control software data status, not the sensors. BMW says reprogramming the engine control unit is the remedy and that changing the oxygen sensors does not give a lasting fix.
For the E46 the bulletin covers production up to 09/2003, and for the E36/7 it covers production through the end of the series.
Watch for: the emergency program lamp together with oxygen sensor codes.
04 Valve clearance check
BMW's model year 2001 maintenance bulletin 00 16 00 (628) adds a valve clearance check, with adjustment as necessary, to Inspection I on the E46 M3. The clearance is set with shims.
Watch for: no recall applies. We found no BMW document giving a symptom list, so this stays a service item.
Recalls
In NHTSA's recall records for the M3 we found air bag inflator, parking brake, power window and wiring campaigns and none for the engine. This is a limit of our search, not proof that no engine recall exists.
