Fits US G20, G01, F30, and G30

Rear output seals on RWD and xDrive; front output seals on xDrive only. Seal OE splits by diff and build: send us your VIN and we'll send yours where noted.

You replace the differential output shaft seals where the axles leave the case at the rear of the car (and at the front half-shaft on xDrive). Rear leaks show on CV boots or the diff housing; front xDrive leaks at the half-shaft bore. Most G-chassis xDrive rear jobs drop the whole rear diff from the subframe. Other rear access paths split by chassis: send us your VIN.

Before you start

Support the car on jack stands or a lift before you go underneath. Do not move or push the car for at least 3 hours after a new propshaft recessed nut at the rear diff.

A leak at the front diff input flange is a different seal: send us your VIN.

What you replace

Rear output shaft seal at diff housing

Both sides. F30 320i/320iX/328iX N20, 328iX N26, 330iX B46 (168 diff): shaft seal with lock ring 33 10 7 505 603, 2 per car. Other rear diffs: send us your VIN and we'll send yours.

Rear output shaft circlip

G20: 33 13 1 214 961. F30 340iX: same number. G30 540iX: same number. Renew if you reuse the shaft.

Rear output dust plate (if damaged)

G20: 33 21 8 740 848 or early 33 21 9 884 746.

Front output shaft seal (half-shaft side)

Shaft seal with lock ring, size 67X44X10/15.5, 2 per car (left and right). G20 M340iX/330iX: 31 50 8 743 675. G01 M40iX: same. G30 xDrive: same. F30 340iX: same. F30 xDrive: send us your VIN and we'll send yours (catalog qty splits by model).

Rear diff top-up oil after service

G20/G01/G30 rear diff drop: Hypoid Axle Oil G4, up to 0.9 l (83 22 2 447 362 bottle). Genuine BMW Hypoid G4 · G20 M340i xDrive fluid kit. Other rear diff oil specs: send us your VIN and we'll send yours.

Single-use hardware (typical)

Rear diff subframe bolts, propshaft recessed nut at rear diff, rear oil filler plug if opened.

Steps

  1. Pick your rear path

    G20, G01, and G30 xDrive: steps 2-7 drop the rear diff from the subframe (main path). Other rear access paths: send us your VIN before you order parts.

  2. Free propshaft at rear diff

    Loosen the recessed nut at the rear diff flange clockwise only; do not use the flange nut as a counterhold. Tie the propshaft up without twisting the joint.

    Caution: refit with a new recessed nut (see Before you start for cure time).

  3. Press out rear output shafts

    Press both rear output shafts out of the diff.

  4. Lower rear diff (G path)

    Secure the diff with a tensioning strap, then lower and remove it from the subframe on G20, G01, and G30 xDrive after exhaust and underbody work frees the shafts.

    Caution: install new subframe bolts on refit (torque specs panel).

  5. Drive rear output seals

    Pull each rear output seal from the diff case, coat the new seal lips with approved rear diff oil, and drive the seal to its limit. Keep the installation protection ring inside the seal until the shaft seats, then pull it at the breaking tab.

    Caution: the protection ring must not slip out before the shaft is seated. If install takes high force, inspect spline teeth and replace damaged parts.

  6. Reinstall rear shafts and diff

    Seat both output shafts, renew circlips if shafts are reused, refit the diff with new subframe bolts, and reconnect the propshaft with a new recessed nut.

  7. Check rear diff oil level

    Open the filler plug if needed with a new plug seal, then top up to 0.9 l Hypoid Axle Oil G4 on the G rear diff drop path. Tighten the filler plug to 60 Nm.

  8. Other rear access paths

    Some chassis use a different rear diff drop or bench path than steps 2-7. Send us your VIN and we'll confirm seals and hardware for yours.

  9. Rear final drive already out

    If the rear final drive is off the car, output seal sizes and mandrels still split by diff. Send us your VIN.

  10. Front output shaft seal

    At the front diff where the half-shaft enters, remove the output shaft from the case. Install a new 67X44X10/15.5 shaft seal with lock ring (left and right on most G xDrive cars) and renew the circlip if you reuse the shaft, then reinstall the shaft.

    Caution: F30 xDrive: send us your VIN and we'll send yours for seal quantity on your diff.

  11. Propshaft center bearing

    If you disturbed the center bearing on the G rear diff drop, tighten its body bolts per torque specs on refit.
