B58 PCV Replacement
Fits
Gen 1 B58 whistling at idle or puffing blue smoke on a cold start? BMW's own bulletin points at one small part: the PCV diaphragm in the valve cover. You can replace it with the valve cover still on the car.
- 15 years
- or 150,000 miles: BMW's extended coverage on this valve for US cars. Check it before you buy anything.
- 4 parts
- in BMW's repair kit: cap, diaphragm, support disc and spring.
- 6 locks
- hold the cap on. Release all six to open it. Hear all six click to close it.
Signs it has split
- Blue or white smoke after a cold start
- A high-pitched whistle under the engine cover at idle
- Cylinder 6 misfire codes 140601 or 140610
- Shudder or limp mode
BMW's test is crankcase vacuum: near -50 mbar is normal, near -100 mbar means a failed valve. Driveway version, not BMW's: at idle, strong suction on the oil filler cap points the same way.

Check the warranty first
- It may be free. BMW bulletin SI B01 14 23 (November 13, 2023) covers this valve for 15 years or 150,000 miles on US cars. It is not a recall. Call a dealer with your VIN first.
- Already paid? If a dealer or shop did this repair before the extension, BMW takes claims at BMW-RP.com, reference B-ELWR PCV 15Y150M.
- Tuned, modified, over the miles or outside the US? BMW's terms exclude outside influences and non-genuine parts, so the dealer may say no. That is when you do it yourself. BMW does not pay you back for your own repair.
What you need
- Repair kit, BMW part number 11 12 1 025 447
- A small flat screwdriver or plastic trim tool
- A clean rag and a cold engine
We stock the Bremmen Parts kit that crosses to that BMW number.
How to replace it
- Engine cold, engine cover off. Lift it straight up, one mount at a time. BMW's rule: 68°F (20°C) or warmer and no jerking, or the cover can break.
- Find the round cap on the valve cover, next to the oil filler cap.
- Release the cap. Free all six locks with the screwdriver before you lift. Go easy: BMW warns that force damages the locks.
- Lift out the old parts. Diaphragm and support disc together, then the spring. Keep dirt out of the opening.
- New parts in. Seat the spring square. Fit the diaphragm and support disc together, then set them on the spring. BMW flags that this can go together the wrong way: match how the old parts came out.
- Press on the new cap until all six locks click.
- Engine cover on, start it, clear the codes. The whistle should be gone.
