B57D30O0 · 2,993 cc · single variable-geometry turbocharger common-rail diesel inline-6 · US catalog listing 11/2017-06/2018 · G30 540d xDrive
The B57 is BMW's 3.0 liter inline-six diesel of the B engine family. BMW's training says the block is a new design that borrows its basic layout from the N57TU, and that the engine follows BMW's modular engine strategy, which reuses parts and workshop tools across the family.
BMW's parts catalog lists one US-market car with the B57: the G30 540d xDrive, built 11/2017 to 06/2018. We have not established that it was delivered to US customers. BMW's North American training describes a planned US-market diesel G30, with the B57 in the upper performance class, and BMW's February 2017 oil bulletin has a row for the G30 with all-wheel drive and the B57. BMW's training marks the B57D30T0 version as not for the US.
NHTSA's recall model lists for 2017 and 2018 show no 540d, so there is no recall record to check.
Scope: BMW's parts data used here ends in 2019. B57 versions after that, including the B57D30T2 and B57D30O2 codes named in BMW's fluid documentation, are beyond scope and are not described.

Factory Deep Dive
US version versus the other B57 versions
BMW's training separates the classes by letter. The US-listed engine is the upper class, B57D30O0. The B57D30T0 has a cooled low-pressure turbocharger compressor housing and laser-remelted piston bowl rims, and BMW marks the cooled housing as not for the US. The US version also gets a diesel particulate sensor, as the N47TU and N57TU already did in the US.
Against the N57TU, BMW's training compares 1,800 bar solenoid injectors and DDE 7.41 on the N57D30O1 with 2,500 bar piezo injectors and DDE 8.32 on the B57D30O0.
Block, head and cylinder walls
The block has a two-part water jacket with modified flow control to cool the cylinder bridges better. BMW sets two rules for preparing the head gasket face: plug the oil feed passages beforehand, and keep machining tools off the surface. The bore coating is so thin that BMW rules out machining the cylinders.
Timing drive and valvetrain
The chains run at the back of the engine, on the flywheel side: a two-stage chain set turns the camshafts and the high-pressure pump, and a chain of its own drives the oil and vacuum pump. As on its predecessor, the camshafts are built up, with lobes and gears fitted onto a tube, and the exhaust camshaft gear is spring-tensioned.
Oil supply and piston cooling
A fully variable vane oil pump is controlled by the engine electronics from an oil pressure sensor, with a fixed backup control loop for faults. Piston cooling is switched by a central valve: it is active from 1.0 bar oil pressure and always active when the oil is below 20 degrees C, and can be switched off at part load. The oil filter module stands upright near cylinder 5, and loosening the cover about 2 turns drains the filter back to the sump.
Cooling
A vacuum-controlled coolant pump can stop flow to the block during warm-up, and heat from the EGR coolers warms the engine oil through a secondary thermostat.
Air, boost and exhaust
The variable-geometry turbocharger runs on plain bearings, with revised vanes and turbine wheel for this engine. A throttle valve restricts intake air during particulate filter regeneration and EGR, and closes when the engine stops. BMW lists the engine against Euro 6 and LEV III.
Fuel injection
The CRI 3.25 piezo injectors work at up to 2,500 bar. Each injector carries a code that the engine electronics need for the right cylinder after a replacement.
SCR tanks
The G30 with this engine carries 12.5 liters in the active urea tank and 8.5 liters in the passive tank, both under the rear right of the car.
Where else BMW fitted the B57
BMW's parts data lists B57 types in ECE, Russian, Indian, Thai and Brazilian catalogs, with the first types starting 10/2014. ECE is BMW's European-specification catalog:
- B57: 7 Series (G11, G12) 730d and 740d, 5 Series (G30, G31) 530d and 540d, 6 Series GT (G32) 630d and 640d, X3 (G01), X4 (G02), X5 (G05), X6 (G06), X7 (G07), 8 Series (G14, G15, G16) 840d and 3 Series (G20, G21) 330d.
- B57S: 750d (G11, G12), M550d (G30, G31), X5 M50d, X6 M50d and X7 M50d.
Those type windows run to the end of the parts data in 12/2019, which is a data limit, not an end of production. Later years are beyond scope.

Known Failure Points and Service Items
Not established yet. We are still researching this engine. No NHTSA recall record for a US B57 car was found, and no BMW bulletin on the engine was opened apart from the oil chart, so no failure point is listed. Failure points here would need a recall, a bulletin or a BMW document behind them.
Service items from BMW's training
These are cautions BMW gives technicians, not reports of faults.
- After an injector is replaced, its printed code has to be assigned to the correct cylinder in the engine electronics.
- The sprayed cylinder wall coating cannot be machined.
- The piston cooling oil spray nozzles must be positioned exactly, or the engine can be damaged.
- The tensioned exhaust camshaft gear ships with an installation pin that is removed after fitting.
- After chain drive work, the high-pressure pump is set to the crankshaft with a gauge.
- Replacing the crankshaft or main bearing shells calls for bearing shell classification.
- The connecting rod caps are fracture-split, so a cap fitted to the wrong rod means replacing the whole rod set.

Common Questions
What BMW models have the B57 engine?
In BMW's parts data the B57 appears in the 7 Series (G11, G12), 5 Series (G30, G31), 6 Series GT (G32), 8 Series, 3 Series (G20, G21), X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7 diesels, mostly in cars from the ECE (European-specification) catalog. In the US catalog the only B57 car is the G30 540d xDrive.
Was the B57 sold in the US?
BMW's parts catalog lists one US-market car with the B57: the G30 540d xDrive, built 11/2017 to 06/2018. We have not established that it was delivered to US customers.
How much oil does the B57 take?
BMW's bulletin lists 6.9 quarts (6.5 liters) for the G30 with all-wheel drive and the B57, and BMW's oil chart lists 0W-30 LL12FE for the B57 in model year 2016 and newer.
How much power does the US-listed B57 make?
BMW's training lists the B57D30O0 at 195 kW (265 HP) at 4,000 rpm and 620 Nm at 2,000-2,500 rpm.
Is the B57 the same engine as the N57?
No. BMW's training describes the B57 as having a redesigned block, and lists 2,500 bar piezo injectors and DDE 8.32 against the N57TU's 1,800 bar solenoid injectors and DDE 7.41.
