BMW diesels in the US: the EGR cooler has a long warranty, the DPF does not

3 min read

BMW sold the N47 2.0-liter diesel in the US starting with the 2014 328d, and it also powered the 2015 to 2017 X3 xDrive28d. People often assume the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has a lifetime warranty. It does not. Here is what BMW of North America actually extended.

What BMW extended (eligible cars only)

  • 10 years or 120,000 miles on the diesel particulate sensor, the NOx sensors, the fuel injectors and the high-pressure fuel pump of N47T and N57T diesels, counted from the car's original in-service date.
  • The EGR cooler: 10 years with no mileage limit.

What is not extended

None of those extensions gives the DPF itself a 10-year warranty. On the six-cylinder N57T diesels (535d, 740Ld, X5 xDrive35d), a covered EGR cooler repair lets the dealer inspect and, if necessary, replace the DPF as part of that repair. The four-cylinder N47T steps in the same bulletin have no DPF line.

Recalls

The US recalls on the 328d and X3 xDrive28d diesels are for the EGR cooler. The repair is free at a BMW center, and the recall notices do not mention the DPF.

One example from the shop

As we heard it, a service advisor went through the warranty on a 328d wagon with about 240,000 miles. The buyer was the fourth owner and bought it at about 220,000 miles. The engine had to come out for the covered repair, and the parts that stood in the way of a proper repair were replaced as part of the job. That fits the EGR cooler extension, the only one above with no mileage limit. We do not have the repair order, so treat it as one example and not a promise.

Before you count on any of it

  • These extensions are VIN-specific and run from the car's original in-service date, so cars first driven in 2015 or earlier are already at or past 10 years as of September 2026.
  • Coverage follows the car, not the owner. BMW USA says its new vehicle limited warranty goes to each subsequent purchaser, and the extensions above are tied to the VIN, so a used buyer can still be covered if the VIN qualifies.
  • They apply to US-spec cars repaired in the US, and most terms exclude repairs made with non-genuine or used BMW parts.
  • The federal emissions warranty is 2 years or 24,000 miles on emission-related parts, and 8 years or 80,000 miles on the specified major components: the catalytic converter, the engine computer and the onboard diagnostic device.

Ask an authorized BMW center to run your VIN so you know what is still covered.
