N54 Brake Fluid Flush

Fits all US N54 cars

E90/E92/E93 335i and 335xi, E82/E88 135i, E60/E61 535i and 535xi, E89 Z4 sDrive35i and 35is, E71 X6 xDrive35i, F01/F02 740i and 740Li. Same DOT 4 low viscosity spec on all of them.

Old brake fluid holds moisture. That softens pedal feel. A full flush pushes fresh fluid through every line and caliper, then clears the CBS reminder.

Before you start

Brake fluid is toxic and will etch paint: keep rags handy. You need a helper for the DSC bleed (one at the scan tool, one at the wheels). Get the car on jack stands or a lift before you open any bleed screw. That last line is our shop rule, not BMW's.

What you replace

Brake fluid

DOT 4 low viscosity, BMW-approved.

The DSC routine names each wheel in turn. N55 cars: see our N55 brake fluid flush guide.

Steps, torque values and part rules come from BMW's repair instructions for N54 brake fluid service. Part numbers come from BMW's parts catalog up to 2020. Check yours by VIN.

Steps

  1. Fill the bleeder

Fill the pressure bleeder with new DOT 4 low viscosity fluid and set charging pressure to 2 bar or less.

Caution: never charge the bleeder above 2 bar.

  2. Lift and stabilize

Raise the car on jack stands or a lift so every caliper bleed screw is easy to reach.

  3. Connect to the reservoir

In the engine bay, connect the bleeder to the brake fluid reservoir per your tool, then confirm the cap seal before you add pressure.

  4. Start DSC bleed

With your helper ready, start the DSC brake bleed service routine on the scan tool and follow its prompts.

Caution: DSC bleed needs a second person at the wheels.

  5. Purge one wheel

When the routine calls for a corner, open that caliper bleed screw and push about 250 ml of fresh fluid through, then close the screw before the routine moves on.

  6. Repeat every wheel

Run the same purge at each wheel the DSC routine names until the tool finishes the bleed sequence.

    • Let the helper confirm each corner on the tool before you open the next screw.
  7. Reset CBS fluid

Reset the CBS brake-fluid service indicator so the dash timer matches the flush you just did.

  8. Depressurize and test

Release pressure on the bleeder, remove the adapter, top up the reservoir if needed, then press the pedal a few times and check every screw and line for wet spots.
