B58 Oil Filter Housing Gasket Replacement

You renew the oil-to-coolant heat exchanger seals where the heat exchanger meets the oil filter module on the engine, or all five housing-to-block gaskets when the full-flow housing comes off the crankcase.

Fits US B58 cars

G20/G21 M340i (B58D, B58TU) first, then Gen 1 B58: F22/F23 M240i, F30N 340i, F32/F33/F36 440i, G30 540i through 06/2019, G01/G02 X3/X4 M40i through 07/2019, plus B58C on G30 540i from 07/2018 and G05 X5 40i. BMW repair path and housing OE: Send us your VIN and we'll send yours.

Before you start

Get the car on jack stands or a lift before any underbody work. BMW covers the heat exchanger seal job and the full housing job (all five block-side gaskets when the housing comes off the crankcase) in separate write-ups. Which one applies: Send us your VIN and we'll send yours. G20 M340i xDrive uses different prep than RWD for the heat exchanger seal job; Gen 1 F-chassis often needs major intake work; G01 adds its own front-end steps: send us your VIN.

Do not use metal-cutting tools on sealing faces. Keep coolant and dirt out of the heat exchanger oil ports. HT coolant refill is vacuum filler only at 7 bar, not a watering can. G05/G07 with 48V: deactivate the 48V system before battery disconnect on the full housing path.

Steps

G20 B58 RWD steps below. Gen 1 and SUV prep differs; send us your VIN for yours.

  1. Remove acoustic cover

Pull the acoustic cover straight up off the rubber mounts.

Caution: on reinstall, only above 20 degrees C; one snap at a time, no jerking; distilled water only, no lubricants.

  2. Open oil filler

Remove the oil filler cap so the sump drains cleanly.

  3. Expose filter harness

Remove the filter-area cover, unlock harness locks, and set the injector or coil harness section aside.

  4. Remove filter cover

Loosen the filter cover, remove cover and element together, and catch spilled oil.

  5. Remove intake silencer

Pull the intake silencer housing off its rubber mounts.

  6. Remove underbody shields

Remove front, centre, and rear underbody protection for the variant shown in your BMW instructions.

  7. Drain HT coolant

    1. HT coolant drain hose
    2. Hose quick connect
    Generic layout: yours may differ.

Drain high-temperature coolant at the lower right hose on the HT radiator.

Caution: inspect lower hose sealing rings; renew if damaged.

  8. Drain engine oil

    1. New oil drain plug sealing ring
    2. Oil drain plug

Drain the sump, fit a new oil drain plug sealing ring, and torque the drain plug to 25 Nm.

Caution: plug sealing ring is single-use. Hot oil if the engine was run.

  9. Loosen exchanger screws

Drawing of the heat exchanger installed, screw torque order with numbered dots: 1 Heat exchanger seated; 2 Screw 1, tighten first; 3 Screw 6, tighten last

Release heat exchanger screws in BMW removal order 6 to 1, turning each screw in 360 degree steps.

  10. Clean sealing faces

Clean the heat exchanger sealing face; keep coolant and dirt out of the oil ports.

  11. Renew seals and install

Renew all heat exchanger seals, install the heat exchanger, tighten M6 screws in order 1 to 6 with 360 degree steps, then torque to 10 Nm.

  12. Reinstall filter cover

Install the filter element and cover, lightly oil the cover O-ring, torque the cover to 25 Nm, then reconnect harness and filter-area cover.

  13. Refill engine oil

Refill engine oil to the BMW volume for your engine and drivetrain.

Caution: refill volume: Send us your VIN and we'll send yours.

  14. Refill and bleed coolant

Refill HT coolant with the vacuum filler at 7 bar, strainer on the filler, run the bleed routine 11 min, then set level 200 ml over the max mark.

Caution: vacuum fill only; terminal 15 on, low beam and hazards on, not ECO PRO during bleed.

  15. Reinstall intake silencer

Reinstall the intake silencer and torque the clamp to 3 Nm.

  16. Reinstall shields and cover

Reinstall underbody shields and the acoustic cover using the acoustic-cover rules above.

  17. Full housing job

When the full-flow oil filter housing comes off the crankcase, BMW adds intake removal and you renew all five housing-to-block gaskets (gaskets 1 to 5). Engine oil refill volume: Send us your VIN and we'll send yours.
