Before you start

This job swaps the heat management module, the coolant control valve on the front of the B58 block. Disconnect the negative battery before wiring work. Filling without a vacuum filler is not released for this cooling system.

Tools

Hood prop for bonnet service position

Support both gas struts before you lean into the bay.

Coolant vacuum filler with B48/B58 tank adapter Y

F30 path: 6 bar. G32 path: 7 bar. Hold 1 l to 2 l extra premixed coolant in the tank above vehicle capacity.

Inline strainer on the vacuum fill line

Use when filling with a vacuum filler.

ESD strap for tank vent valve work

Ground yourself before unplugging the vent valve.

Drain pans, PPE, torque wrench

Non-metal scrapers only on HMM sealing surfaces.

Steps

  1. Bonnet service position

Drawing of the bonnet gas strut and service position support with numbered dots: 1 Gas strut; 2 Ball pin on the hood; 3 Hood prop on the strut
    1. Gas strut
    2. Ball pin on the hood
    3. Hood prop on the strut
    Generic layout: yours may differ.

Set the bonnet in service position with a hood prop on both gas struts before you lean into the engine bay.

  2. Disconnect the battery

Disconnect the negative battery cable and de-energize the vehicle the way your model requires before any connector work.

Caution: do not pull on wires when disconnecting plugs.

  3. Remove covers and brace

Drawing of the DME control unit connector face with numbered dots: 1 DME control unit; 2 Connector lock tab; 3 Connector lock tab
    1. DME control unit
    2. Connector lock tab
    3. Connector lock tab
    Generic layout: yours may differ.

Remove acoustic covers, the front strut brace or stiffening plate, the intake silencer, and the tank vent valve as needed for plenum access. Use ESD protection on tank vent valve connectors.

Caution: do not drive with the stiffening plate or strut brace left off. Mount the acoustic cover only above 20 degrees C.

  4. Remove the DME

Drawing of the connecting pipe separated from the HMM with numbered dots: 1 Connecting pipe; 2 Heat management module; 3 Slide pipe off the module
    1. Connecting pipe
    2. Heat management module
    3. Slide pipe off the module
    Generic layout: yours may differ.

Unlock connectors and remove the DME control unit and holder so the intake plenum and coolant lines clear.

  5. Drain both coolants

Drain the low-temperature and high-temperature coolant circuits into a pan and dispose of the fluid locally. Do not pour used coolant back into the system.

Caution: hot coolant and hot surfaces can burn. Wear PPE and work on cooled components.

  6. Remove intake plenum

Drawing of the intake plenum screw loosen order with numbered dots: 1 Plenum screw 7 (loosen first); 2 Plenum screw 1 (loosen last); 3 Intake plenum; 4 Raise plenum upward
    1. Plenum screw 7 (loosen first)
    2. Plenum screw 1 (loosen last)
    3. Intake plenum
    4. Raise plenum upward
    Generic layout: yours may differ.

Loosen plenum-to-head screws in order 7 to 1, raise the plenum, and remove it while keeping coolant out of the cylinder head intake ports.

Caution: do not loosen the tie-rod screws in the marked area on the plenum.

  7. Remove the HMM

Unlock HMM wiring and coolant lines, lift the module off the carrier, and catch the last coolant. G20: remove the module with the connecting pipe as one unit. Gen 1 F30/G32/G01: plenum-out access and captive screws. G05 X5 40i: send us your VIN and we'll send access steps for your build.

Caution: coolant line locks must click audibly on reconnect. Clean sealing surfaces without metal cutters and keep them free of oil or solvent.

  8. Install new seals

Drawing of the new sealing rings on the HMM with numbered dots: 1 New sealing ring on the HMM; 2 HMM sealing face
    1. New sealing ring on the HMM
    2. HMM sealing face
    Generic layout: yours may differ.

Install new sealing rings on the connecting pipe and HMM, coat them with coolant, and fit the module. Gen 1: new gasket ring and profile gasket. TU: new O-rings and pre-formed seals.

  9. Torque HMM mounting

Drawing of the HMM mounting screws on the G20 path with numbered dots: 1 HMM mounting screw; 2 HMM mounting screw; 3 HMM mounting screw
    1. HMM mounting screw
    2. HMM mounting screw
    3. HMM mounting screw
    Generic layout: yours may differ.

Tighten HMM mounting screws to the row for your path: Gen 1 F30/G32/G01 at 8 Nm, G20 heat exchange module to crankcase at 10 Nm. G05 X5 40i: send us your VIN and we'll send HMM mounting torque.

  10. Reinstall the plenum

Fit new intake plenum seals. Tighten plenum-to-head screws at 5 Nm first pass, then 10 Nm in sequence 1 to 7. Torque plenum rear/front supports at 10 Nm. Install the charge air duct with a new throttle body seal at 8 Nm.

Caution: stiffening plate stretch bolts are single-use where listed.

  11. Reinstall DME and covers

Reinstall the DME, tank vent valve, intake silencer, acoustic covers, and strut brace or stiffening plate with new stretch bolts where required. Torque the DME holder on the strut tower at 2.5 Nm on F30/G32 plenum paths. Tighten stiffening plate bolts to 56 Nm + 45 degrees at the front axle support and 56 Nm + 90 degrees at the adapter plate on F30/G32 paths. G20, G05 X5 40i, and other paths without a listed row: send us your VIN and we'll send stiffening plate bolt torque.

  12. Vacuum fill and bleed

Refill both coolant circuits with a vacuum filler, the correct B48/B58 tank adapter Y, an inline strainer, and bleed the system. Switch ignition off before the fill. Do not use a watering-can fill.

Caution: HT fill volume for US cars: send us your VIN and we'll send yours.

  13. Program the DME

Encode or program control units after the vehicle test when the DME was removed.
