What Makes It Special
The N63TU2 is the second technical update of the N63 — and the first version BMW enthusiasts broadly consider reliable. The original N63 had well-documented oil consumption, injector and turbo-seal issues.
The TU2 addressed these with improved exhaust-gas characteristics, wider torque availability, better fuel consumption and more robust components, and moved to Valvetronic for throttle-free load control.
Maintenance Watch Items
- The hot-vee turbo layout still makes service access challenging, even though the TU2 is far more reliable than the original N63.
- Valve cover gasket oil leaks — less common than the original N63 but still a V8 weak point.
- Coolant hoses and connections — a twin-turbo V8 means more potential failure points.
- Spark plugs require careful installation due to their depth in the head.
- Close-coupled catalytic converters (in the V) — expensive if they fail.
