What Makes It Special
The B58 is part of BMW's modular engine family — it shares its per-cylinder architecture (bore spacing, stroke, displacement per cylinder) with the B48 four-cylinder and B38 three-cylinder, which means common service parts across the family.
It uses Double VANOS (variable timing on intake and exhaust), Valvetronic (variable valve lift), and a twin-scroll turbocharger with indirect charge-air cooling. The closed-deck crankcase is a major upgrade over the N55's open-deck design, making it far stronger for tuning.
Maintenance Watch Items
- Coolant expansion tank can crack (plastic, under pressure) — inspect at every service.
- Charge pipe connections can develop boost leaks under spirited driving.
- Spark plugs on a ~30,000-mile interval — use OEM-spec plugs only.
- Serpentine belt & tensioner — listen for chirps at cold start.
- Oil filter housing gasket is a shared weak point with the B48.
