Oil Specification
Critical
BMW Longlife-04 ONLY (diesel-specific low-ash 5W-30). Using LL-01 petrol oil in this diesel can damage the diesel particulate filter — this is a critical distinction, not a preference.
What Makes It Special
The N57TU is the updated version of BMW's inline-six diesel. It uses common-rail piezoelectric direct injection at extremely high pressures (up to 2,000 bar / 29,000 psi). The DPF is integrated into the exhaust and the engine uses AdBlue/DEF injection for NOx reduction.
The variable-geometry turbo delivers broad torque — peak arrives early and holds across a wide band, making these engines feel effortless at highway speeds.
Maintenance Watch Items
- Oil spec is CRITICAL: BMW Longlife-04 only. LL-01 petrol oil will clog the DPF. Use only LL-04-approved low-ash 5W-30 diesel oil.
- DPF regeneration — short-trip driving can prevent regen cycles from completing, leading to clogging and limp mode.
- AdBlue/DEF system — heater elements, injector and tank can fail, especially in cold climates.
- Glow plugs — can fail and cause hard starts in cold weather.
- Swirl flaps — can break and drop debris into earlier N57 engines; the TU improved this.
- EGR valve — can carbon up; cleaning or replacement needed.
